Habituámo-nos a considerar o trágico afundamento do “TITANIC” como tendo sido maior desastre naval.De facto foi um no meio de muitos outros. Estudando-os, verifica-se que os maiores
foram escondidos do domínio público por inconveniência política da verdade.

Entre todas as tragédias navais destaca-se a do “WILHELM GUSTLOFF”, torpeado no Báltico com mais de 10.000 pessoas a bordo, a maioria das quais mulheres e crianças, refugiados da Prússia Oriental.

Este navio teve um prometedor início, tendo sido criado exclusivamente para oferecer viagens de alegria aos trabalhadores alemães. A sua viagem inaugural foi a Lisboa e ao Funchal, locais exóticos nos sonhos dos nórdicos e até então os únicos portos que permitiam turistas alemães (por causa da problemática internacional da inconvertibilidade do marco alemão).

As primeiras viagens foram por muitos consideradas de “VIAGENS ao CÉU”, tendo os alemães ficado encantados com Portugal.

A última viagem foi 0 transporte de refugiados da Prússia Oriental, afundando-se a 30 de Janeiro de 1945, durante a noite, com temperaturas de 18 graus negativos. O número de mortos foi seis vezes superior ao do “TITANIC”.

Um investigador luso-alemão e um membro da tripulação, sobrevivente desta catástrofe, juntaram os dados dos seus arquivos pessoais, narrando aqui as páginas mais belas e as mais tristes do destino deste navio e dos que nele embarcaram

FROM HEAVEN TO HELL

We have got used to the idea that the tragic sinking of the “TITANIC” was the greatest naval disaster of all times. In fact it was just one among many others. By studying these tragedies we
can see that the biggest disasters were hidden from us because the truth was politically inconvenient.

The biggest naval disaster of them all was the sinking of the “WILHELM GUSTLOFF” by torpedoes in the Baltic Sea with over ten thousand people on board, the majority of which were women and children fleeing from Eastern Prussia.

This ship made a very promising start, being built exclusively to offer German workers “voyages of joy”. Her maiden voyage was to Lisbon and Funchal, exotic places in the dreams of the Nordic
people and at the time the only foreign ports that would allow German tourists ashore (due to the international problems over the inconvertibility of the German mark).

Many people considered the first voyages “TRIPS to HEAVEN” and the German people immediately fell in love with Portugal.

Her last voyage was one of transporting refugees from Eastern Prussia, voyage which ended in the sinking of the ship during the night of the 30″ of January 1945 with the temperature at 18 degrees below. The number of dead was six times that of the “TITANIC”.

A Luso-German researcher and a crew member who survived this catastrophe have joined together the facts from their personal archives, thus narrating the most beautiful and the saddest pages of the story of this ship and those who boarded her.
